![]() Parallels Desktop supports a plethora of guest operating systems, including every nearly Windows from 3.1 to Vista several Linuxes FreeBSD, OS/2 and eComStation Solaris and MS-DOS 6.22. But development is happening at a rapid rate as Parallels Desktop’s short history attests. Parallels Desktop is of course an Intel Mac only app and is still in development. In the end, running Windows XP on it, I tried Mavis Beacon Typing Tutor, The Sims (version 1), Age of Empires and Palm software. ![]() Maybe the Mac does provide all the apps I need. I usually review software I have a need for and, in Parallels Desktop, I was sure I had a need to run Windows applications to. The hardest thing about reviewing it though has been finding a need. Since then I’ve been testing Parallels Desktop and I’d recommend it without hesitation - but it’s even more impressive considering it is the newcomer to the market, with Parallels Inc only opening shop in July 2005. Who needs it?Ī while ago I tested Q, an emulator that runs quite okay on Intel Macs (but painfully slow on PPC Macs) and said for many people who have only the occasional need for Windows, it is an acceptable solution. It’s only got one challenge - one very big challenge. Secondly, and excitingly, Parallels Desktop will sell Macs. ![]() There are alternatives to running Windows on a Mac, but Parallels Desktop has reduced them all to also rans. It has even knocked off Apple’s own solution, Boot Camp. Parallels Desktop has become the choice of many on the Mac platform for running Windows applications. With that definition in mind, add to the list Parallels Desktop for the Mac. To my mind, a killer app should either kill off an existing market leader, or be the reason a person buys a particular platform. I don’t agree with a few things on the list, and particularly the absences (eg Word Perfect, Windows 95, Apache, and Word for Windows). Apple got a look in with Mac Write, Mac Paint, iTunes and OS X (the only operating system on the list), plus a few other Mac based apps. So, you can expect a decent gaming experience with the VM.A recent article in eWeek listed 25 killer apps since the dawn of personal computing. The developers have also introduced plug-and-play support for game controllers in Windows. In addition to Windows 11 Home, ARM versions of Windows 11 Pro and Enterprise are compatible with Parallels Desktop. Starting with version 18.1, Parallels Desktop for Mac allows you to download and install the ARM version of Windows 11 in a single click. It is an impressive option if you want to use heavy-duty apps like Visual Studio, AutoCAD, or SQL Server on your Mac. More importantly, the app claims to use 2.5x less energy on Apple Silicon Macs even while providing maximum performance. Parallels Desktop 18 (and later) offers native support for M1 and M2 Macs from Apple. So, if you struggle to find a good enough Mac alternative for a Windows app, Parallels Desktop can solve the problem. The list of supported apps includes Microsoft Office for Windows as well. Parallels Desktop for Mac lets you run over 200,000 Windows applications in Coherence or Full Screen modes. As you can guess, the developers are also using proprietary technologies and algorithms to enable the many features of the virtualization tool. Thanks to its partnership with Microsoft, all Windows 11 Parallels Desktop VMs will automatically have a TPM chip. For instance, it uses a virtual Trusted Platform Module to enable Windows security features, Mac Keychain access, and Secure Boot for the VM. Because Parallels Desktop for Mac aims to help you run Windows apps on your Mac, it uses a couple of more technologies. In addition, you can use the Parallels Toolbox to configure and control hardware-oriented options like CD/DVD, USB devices, sound, video capture, etc.īut the story does not end there. According to the developers, Parallels Desktop for Mac uses a unique type of desktop virtualization called "hardware-assisted full hardware virtualization." This virtualization method uses VT-x technology from Intel so that the hardware and software aspects of the whole computer can be simulated efficiently.Īs a result, the virtual machines you create using Parallels Desktop will offer maximum customizability.
